Emma's Story always close to our hearts

Through our work with job seekers we have achieved great success. A story close to our heart is Emma's story.  Emma, a 36-year-old woman, had been unemployed for 168 weeks when she was referred to MAX Employment. Battling a 20-year drug and alcohol addiction and many barriers to employment, see here for Emma’s story.

Career Advice offered from NRL legend Steve Mortimer

Job seekers had the chance to speak with NRL legend Steve Mortimer at the MAX Employment stall at the Blacktown Careers and Employment expo on September 2 at the Blacktown TAFE.

An NRL hero in the 70’s and 80’s, with a long, successful career as both a sportsman and businessman, Steve was present to recount his successes and lessons learnt in his career.

Steve is recognised as one of the all time great halfbacks, a great captain for New South Wales and Australia and a  teriffic ambassador for rugby league and also heads up a successful marketing and promotions business.

Baby Boomers not overlooked

A government-funded study reported by Paul Bibby, The Age (25/8/10) suggests that attitudes towards older workers are changing.

Bibby reported that Monash University researched 600 big organisations, with the director of research and graduate studies Professor Philip Taylor and his team finding that during labour shortages, 50 percent of public sector employers put the recruitment of mature workers at the top of their agendas. About 40 per cent of private sector bosses said they also, would look to mature job seekers.

We at MAX Employment find this study exciting and prosperous for our clients. The Cleveland office just this week placed Angela, aged 52, into work after two days of being registered with the office. While unemployed, Angela had felt undervalued and found it hard to keep morale up but upon her recent employment with Mitre 10, believes employers find mature candidates “have a greater deal of reliability”.

Professor Taylor said that rather than discrimination, a lack of relevant skills might be keeping mature workers out of a job.

If you’re a mature job seeker and concerned your skills need refreshing for the workforce, contact your local MAX Employment office on 1800 625 350.
